SUMMARY:Why Doesn’t Our Sun Just Explode? Or\, Why has It Lasted So Long?
DESCRIPTION:The Speaker at June’s Monthly LCAS meeting will be Mark Christensen\, PHD. The space race inspired him to earn degrees in both mathematics and physics while an undergraduate at Wayne State University. He earned is Masters in Physics at Purdue and his PhD in probability at Wayne State University He joined Northrop Corporation’s Defense System Division in Rolling Meadows\, Illinois. He retired from Northrop Grumman’s Rolling Meadows plant in 1999 as Vice President of Engineering.  Throughout his professional career Mark remained active as an amateur astronomer \nWe all have heard that our Sun produces energy by the fusion of hydrogen and other nuclei. And we have known for nearly two centuries that how much energy it produces every second\, and we know from our experiments\, theories\, and tests that fusion reactions can produce large amounts of energy. And we know this has been going on for billions of years. But when we examine the facts carefully we realize that the sun really doesn’t produce that much energy considering its considerable mass. In this talk we’ll explore why this is so and will look into the details of the fusion reactions going on in our star\, including on-going research in this area – we still don’t know the whole story. \n Meeting Link for LCAS Members

DESCRIPTION:A Game of Mysteries: Astronomy and the Unveiling of Nature’s Secret Workings\nShane L. Larson\nClarkson University\n\nNo human has ever travelled farther from Earth than the Moon. No robotic probe has ever travelled farther than the edge of our solar system. Yet huddled around a telescope at night\, we regularly regale our friends and guests with tales of galaxies that are millions of light years away\, and how a mini-solar system of planets whirls around nearby Alpha Centauri\, and how stars are birthing themselves out of the maelstrom of the Orion Nebula.\n\nWe live in a Cosmos grand and vast with underlying rules governing its behavior\, called “The Laws of Nature.” From our vantage point here on Earth\, humans have spent centuries uncovering those rules — discovering what they are\, what they mean\, and how they work. In this talk\, we’ll use astronomy to understand how we glean knowledge from the Cosmos\, explore how our understanding of the Laws of Nature has changed over time\, and contemplate some of the great mysteries still confronting us.\n\n———-\nshort bio\n———-\n\nShane Larson is a professor of Physics at Clarkson University and the Director of Integrated Engineering and Applied Science Projects. He works in the field of gravitational wave astrophysics\, specializing in studies of compact stars\, binaries\, and the galaxy with both the ground-based LIGO project\, and the forthcoming space-based observatory LISA. He is an award winning teacher\, and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He is an avid amateur astronomer\, observing with two homebuilt Dobsonians\, a 12.5″ named EQUINOX and a 22″ named COSMOS MARINER. The technological advances that increased astronomer’s ability to resolve surface features also influenced the development of a lunar cartographic system and an associated nomenclature. This presentation focuses on the most significant lunar cartographic and nomenclature developments during the period of 1300 thru 1900.

SUMMARY:LCAS Monthly Meeting - The Cosmos in the Lab: Exploring the Dark Matter Mass Scale with Direct Detection
DESCRIPTION:While the astrophysical and cosmological evidence supporting the existence of a gravitationally-active dark matter is overwhelming\, no signals unambiguously attributable to it have yet been observed in laboratory experiments. The prevailing hypothesis is that the dark matter is comprised of a new fundamental particle not found in the Standard Model of Particle Physics. In that framework\, the possible mass of the dark matter particle ranges over 50 orders of magnitude\, posing a challenging and exciting landscape for detection. In this talk\, Dr. Dylan J Temples of Fermilab will briefly review the evidence supporting dark matter and the properties which a fundamental particle must satisfy to be dark matter. From there\, he will discuss the signatures of dark matter models across the range of allowed masses and the detector technologies used to investigate them. DESCRIPTION:Amateur Astronomers Attend an Astronomical Conference: A Report on AAS 244 \nOur Speaker for the September 19th of the Lake County Astronomical Society is Dale Dellutri who has had a life-long fascination with science and technology. He will share his experience in attending the latest convention of the American Astronomical Society. He has worked with computer hardware and software since the late 1960’s\, and has managed technical employees and projects in various fields including programming\, data center construction\, legal\, tax\, and futures and equity trading. He has written programs in many computer languages. He is now retired. Mr. Dellutri has an MBA and a MS in Information Science from the University of Chicago\, and a BS in Engineering Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is an amateur astronomer\, specializing in computational astronomy\, and manages the Skokie Valley Astronomers website. As an amateur astronomer\, he has given a number of astronomy-themed presentations over the years to local astronomy clubs. \nThe presentation will be followed by an LCAS business meeting starting about 8:30PM. DESCRIPTION:The Speaker for the June 20th meeting of the Lake County Astronomical Society is Jim Hopkins\, retired Professor of Astronomy at Joliet Junior College with a Masters Degree from Eastern Illinois University. Jim was also a teacher at Naperville High School and at the College of DuPage. He has given over 100 presentations on Astronomy over the years in the Chicagoland area.  The talk will cover the nature of impactors\, the creation of craters\, the nature of the evidence that supports the impact theory\, and mass extinctions related to cratering.\n\nAfterwards\, weather permitting\, Members of LCAS will show the night sky to guests through their powerful telescopes.

SUMMARY:The Europa Clipper Mission
DESCRIPTION:The Europa Clipper is NASA’s largest-ever planetary spacecraft & it is on its way to the Jupiter system. Arriving in April 2030\, the goal of this mission is to study Europa\, one of the Galilean moons & one of our solar system’s most interesting ocean worlds. The main goal will be to characterize whether this moon might host conditions that are suitable for life.
